Overview

Judge Theodore R. Tyma (Retired) is a member of Pullman & Comley's Alternative Resolution (ADR) practice.

Judge Tyma retired from the bench in May 2025 after 21 years of judicial service. During his judicial career, he served as a trial court judge assigned to preside over a variety of civil and criminal disputes and tried numerous jury and court cases. Judge Tyma was also assigned to be the presiding judge for civil matters for the majority of his judicial career.

During his time as a judge and since joining Pullman & Comley’s ADR practice, Judge Tyma has continued to draw on his extensive litigation experience developed as a private attorney litigator and judge in assisting parties in resolving a variety of state and federal civil matters. These matters have included personal injury, employment, construction, probate, real estate, environmental and insurance coverage disputes.

Judge Tyma is consistently requested by lawyers from across Connecticut and out of state to mediate or arbitrate their matters because they recognize his commitment to achieving fair resolutions, knowledge of the law and ability to apply practicality and common sense to a dispute. Illustrative of this, he has been asked to conduct pre-suit mediations involving claims of personal injury and sexual assault, a neighborhood environmental dispute involving a gasoline spill from a tanker truck and matters involving municipalities.

Judge Tyma formerly served as president of the Connecticut Judges Association, member of the Committee of Uniformity of Court Procedures, Bench Bar Foreclosure Committee, Judicial Branch Law Library Committee and, most recently, was a governor-nominated member of the Judicial Review Council. He also was a member of the judicial faculty for the Connecticut Judges’ Institute, where he taught a course on Civil Protection Orders.
