Kelly Scott Discusses Prenuptial Agreements in an NBC Connecticut News Interview

NBC Connecticut

Co-chair of Pullman & Comley’s Family Law practice Kelly A. Scott was featured in an interview with NBC Connecticut, where she discussed what couples should know about prenuptial agreements and why they are becoming increasingly common among newly engaged couples.

In the segment, Kelly explains what is driving this trend, noting, “we are seeing people getting married later in life these days and I think with that comes more financial literacy, more life experience, more assets potentially that they may want to protect in the event of a future divorce.” Kelly underscores that a prenuptial agreement defines how property will be distributed and clarifies what a judge can and cannot do in the event of a divorce. Without one in place, she cautions, those decisions are left to the court. She also explains that issues involving child custody, child support, or other child-related matters cannot be determined in a prenuptial agreement, as these agreements are focused primarily on finances. “Anything between the two spouses that deals with financial matters, we can address in a prenuptial agreement,” she says.
