Information Blocking:  What Physicians and Physician Groups Need to Do Now to Prepare for the April 5 Deadline

Health Care attorneys Russell F. Anderson and Amy E. Murray hosted a webinar for members of the Fairfield County Medical Association and the Hartford County Medical Association on the topic of "Information Blocking."  The 21st Century Cures Act prohibits physicians and group practices, among others, from preventing or otherwise discouraging the access, exchange and use of electronic health information.  During the webinar, Russ and Amy addressed the regulations that take effect on April 5 under which physicians will be required to respond to all requests for electronic health information made by patients and other providers on a timely basis. Because practices that constitute “information blocking” are not always obvious, a close evaluation of  physicians' technology, administrative processes, and legal contracts are necessary to ensure compliance.
