PRESS RELEASE: Ven C. Hsu Sentenced By Connecticut Superior Court

HARTFORD, Conn.:  A former West Hartford doctor was sentenced today in the Connecticut Superior Court in the Judicial District of Waterbury before the Honorable Roland D. Fasano.

Ven C. Hsu, 70, was sentenced to a suspended sentence with no jail time, five years’ probation, a fine of $20,000 and 200 hours of community service. Hsu originally faced two counts of manslaughter in the 2nd degree and 24 counts of illegally prescribing narcotic drugs with a maximum of 291 years imprisonment and $887,000 in fines.  Both counts of manslaughter and 22 of the 24 counts of illegally prescribing controlled substances were dismissed.  As part of the sentencing, Hsu agreed to not seek reinstatement of his revoked medical license.

“Sentencing days are difficult,” said Alan Sobol, Hsu’s attorney.  “Mr. Hsu is very saddened by the deaths of two of his former patients.  However, we believe that the State’s decision to dismiss the manslaughter charges and many of the other counts resulted in a sentence that was fair and appropriate, given the facts of the case.”
