Lee Hoffman Quoted on Connecticut’s Approach to Future Data Center Development
Pullman & Comley Energy Attorney and firm Chair Lee D. Hoffman was quoted in the Hartford Business Journal article, “CT Considers ‘Bring Your Own Power’ Model for Data Center Development.” The piece discussed Gov. Ned Lamont’s recent indication that Connecticut may slow new data center approvals unless developers add on‑site generation.
In the article, Lee notes that the governor’s comments come at an important moment as AI and other energy‑intensive technologies drive rising electricity demand. He says that raising the issue now gives the state a chance to plan ahead rather than respond during a shortage. “I’m encouraged by the fact that the governor is willing to start this conversation before it becomes a crisis,” Lee said. He emphasized that Connecticut is not seeking to halt development, adding, “I think Connecticut doesn’t want to have a moratorium on data centers. But by the same token, I think that the governor is essentially saying, let’s be smart about this, let’s be intentional about this and let’s make sure that we do this intelligently.”
The article also highlighted developers already pursuing self‑powered models and pointed to similar policy discussions taking place in other states facing rising energy needs. Lee noted that these examples may help guide Connecticut as it considers how to support data center growth while maintaining reliability and protecting ratepayers.
