Ryan O'Donnell Quoted on Connecticut's Evolving Vineyard Industry
Pullman & Comley Hospitality practice chair Ryan A. O’Donnell was quoted in the Hartford Business Journal article “Changing Vines: New Owners Uncork Fresh Ideas for CT’s Legacy Vineyards,” which explores the recent wave of vineyard and winery sales across Connecticut. The article highlights a broader industry transition, as long-time owners retire and new buyers step in. With more than 45 licensed farm wineries in the state and a multi-billion-dollar economic impact, Connecticut’s wine industry is experiencing a generational shift alongside changing consumer trends and economic pressures.
Ryan notes that the increase in transactions is being driven by more than just market activity. “What I think is really interesting is not just the volume or the numbers — it’s what is driving the uptick,” he said, pointing to a generational handoff as founding owners step away and successors pursue different paths. “It becomes a physical asset that, yes, it produces income, and that’s great,” Ryan said, “but it also produces an identity.” He emphasized that success in today’s environment requires a broader, experience-driven approach, stating, “The folks who are really making headway are the ones running this with a much larger hospitality concept, or the lifestyle buyer who has a certain tolerance to price fluctuations that a traditional industry buyer probably wouldn’t have.”
