IN THE NEWS: Pullman & Comley Attorney Quoted on Sotomayor's Handling of Reverse Discrimination Case

Congressional Quarterly

In the May 27 issue of Congressional Quarterly, Pullman & Comley attorney Dan Schwartz commented on Judge Sonia Sotomayor's handling of Ricci v. DeStefano, a reverse discrimination lawsuit filed by a group of Connecticut firefighters. Judge Sotomayor and the two other judges on her panel first issued a brief, unsigned summary order and four months later, a brief unsigned opinion -- actions that are likely to be scrutinized when the Senate considers her nomination to the Supreme Court.

According to Dan, dispensing with cases using summary orders is "not an everyday occurrence but it's not an uncommon occurrence either. It's not like she's doing it on her own," he said. "There were three judges who looked at the lower court opinions and said in essence we don't have anything to add to it."
