Educating Institutions on Transgender Student Rights

The firm’s Education Law attorneys are well-versed on the emerging legal considerations pertaining to transgender students in schools, colleges and universities. Connecticut has been a leader among states seeking to protect students whose gender identity is different from the gender assigned to them at birth, and the U.S. Department of Education has extended actions to the gender-discrimination proscriptions found within Title IX of the Education Act of 1972 to transgender students. As a result, educational institutions must address questions as to how best to translate these evolving laws into practical implementation, including within the context of bathroom and locker room access as well as residential hall assignments.

Our attorneys have frequently spoken on these topics before the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges and at the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education’s annual convention. We also have addressed the unique issues confronting private and preparatory schools at meetings of the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools and the Connecticut Association of Schools.
