Property Valuation Revaluation Assessment Deadlines

Board of Assessment Appeals Petitions Due February 17 & 21

Over the last several months, property owners concerned about their new revaluation assessments had the opportunity to appear before revaluation companies' representatives on an informal basis to challenge their new values.

Those meetings have concluded. Notices have been sent to all property owners who made these appearances.  The notices indicate whether the proposed value has been maintained or decreased. (It would be extremely unlikely for the revaluation company to increase a proposed value!)

The next step in the process, if a further challenge is planned, is the filing of a protest petition with the particular municipality's Board of Assessment Appeals.  Each municipality tends to have a somewhat different form; a copy should be obtained from the town's assessor's office or from its website if available. Care must be taken in completing the form to make sure that accurate information is furnished to the Board.

The deadline for filing a Superior Court appeal is two months after the mailing of the Board's decision; to be certain of this date, a copy of the envelope in which the Board's notice is received should be retained for evidentiary purposes.

The communities listed on the following schedule require Board of Assessment Appeals' petitions to be filed by February 17 and February 21.

It should be noted that a number of communities obtained an extension of the February filing deadline until March 20.  Pullman & Comley's Valuation Department will forward a Client Alert concerning these communities in the next several weeks.
